Social and Emotional Development

Nowadays, social and emotional skills are becoming more and more important for children. It helps them to respond to situations, to manage their emotions, to learn to communicate, to solve conflicts in relationships, and to express themselves in a positive way. The Social & Emotional Development Class of ICK will lay the foundations for those basic skills in children’s life now and in the future.

  1. 1-    Communication: This section begins by helping children understand and express what makes them unique. As children learn to convey their interests, their values, and even their problems, they increase their self-acceptance and self-confidence. The next step is to help children learn the skills involved in making an initial connection with other children. Children need to know how to introduce themselves, how to develop a personal dialog with one child, and then how to maintain a conversation in a group. Many children who have problems in social skills choose the wrong tactics for interacting with other children.
  2. 2-    Nonverbal Communication: Researchers in social communication note that nonverbal skills are actually much more important in communicating one’s emotions than verbal skills. People pay attention not just to the words that are said, but also to the way they are said. Children intuitively know how to convey their feelings by their nonverbal communication and how to “read” the feelings of others.
  3. 3-    Being Part of a Group: In this section, children will learn a variety of skills that can help them be accepted by groups, and even become leaders.
  4. 4-    Expressing your feelings: This section includes activities that will help children express their feelings and also control them. Identify the basic emotions, learn to express emotions on their face, their speech, and their actions. Learning how to control anger is a special skill to be focused on this section.
  5. 5-    Caring about yourself and others: Caring and kindness are important values in our culture, and they are virtues that are the underpinning of a child’s moral development. Children will learn how to take care of themselves, to be concerned about others, to listen, to share with others. Having experienced negative emotions such as shame, guilty, anger, fear,… learning to deal with them and interact with the world around them.
  6. 6-    Problem Solving: This section focuses on guiding and giving the children experience to find solutions to solve the problems; learn to think before acting, evaluating the options before making a decision.
  7. 7-    Listening: A two-way street: Listening skills are much more complex than most people realize. Learn how to understand and there must be effective interaction between two people in conversation.
  8. 8-    Standing up for yourself: Handling bullying and teasing requires a special set of skills, because it involves dealing with children who are typically very aggressive and have been successful in victimizing others. Not only standing up for themselves but also standing up for the others.
  9. 9-    Managing conflict: Conflicts are an inevitable part of life, and children’s ability to constructively resolve conflicts can be an important part of their social success. The activities in this section are particularly important for children with problems in anger control and aggressiveness.
